Lighten Up

By Julie Rahm

The storage unit business is thriving. Storage units dot the landscape in every town across the country. Renting a storage unit is commonplace and having a storage unit is like owning a car. Everyone has one and some have multiples. People everywhere pay money to retain “stuff” they are not using. Instead of selling or donating their “stuff”, it goes into a storage unit somewhere. Our culture is so driven by material possessions that people incur financial losses to hoard stuff. Marketers have taught us possessions are the key to our happiness. Buy stuff and be happy. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Having items in a storage unit will not improve your life and make you happy. The key to happiness is you and your mindset. And, similar to your car, your mindset must stay tuned up.

If your mind is tuned up, you will have a happy and prosperous life. If, on the other hand, your mind is filled with excess junk, you will be burdened with a mindset that impedes the attainment of your goals. Unproductive thoughts are like your stuff in a storage unit; not useful and a financial burden. So, lighten up your mind with a mental spring cleaning. Empty out your mental storage unit and get rid of the thoughts that do not contribute to your wellbeing. You have the power to stop these thoughts from renting space in your head. Have a mental garage sale. Let’s get into my Mindset Mechanic Tool Kit and tune up your mindset by lightening up!

The first tool you need is the metaphorical level. The level indicates when your mood is off balance and your thoughts are taking you away from results you desire. You think about 60,000 thoughts each day. Who could keep track of them all? That is why the metaphorical level is so important. It alerts you when you are thinking thoughts that are not productive. Remember, the way you think affects the way you feel. The way you feel affects the way you act. And the way you act drives the results you get. The level indicates when your thoughts make you feel badly.

When the level tilts off balance, stop and notice the thoughts you were thinking. The metaphorical flashlight shines into the dark recesses of your mind to help identify unproductive thoughts. Use the metaphorical pliers to pluck the thoughts out of your mind. Then, use the metaphorical hammer to hammer in more positive thoughts one believable thought at a time. Just a small perspective shift can help you think more positive thoughts.

So as you engage in spring cleaning to lighten your physical load, lighten your mental load, too. Keep your metaphorical tool kit handy. And, enjoy spring!
